Description
Your first spells, ready before your turn comes up
Low-level play is where most spellcasting questions happen. New players ask what a cantrip does, how far Thunderwave reaches or whether Shield lasts until their next turn, and every answer means flipping pages. This box from Dungeons & Dragons puts those answers on cards. It is part of the official reference card line built around the 2024 spell list, and this first entry covers the levels every caster starts with.
What is inside the box
The listing counts 98 spells. That splits into 34 level 0 spells and 64 level 1 spells, which together make up the entire toolkit of a new wizard, cleric, druid, bard, sorcerer, warlock or ranger. You also get 6 customizable cards and a single instruction card explaining how the set works.
- 98 spell cards across levels 0 and 1
- 34 cantrip cards for at-will magic
- 64 first-level spell cards
- 6 customizable cards for homebrew or notes
- 1 instruction card
Sorted by level, shared by the party
The class decks in this comparison give one character its whole spell list. This box takes the opposite approach: it groups spells by level, so a single copy can sit in the middle of the table and serve several casters at once. When the bard and the cleric both want Healing Word, they pull the same card, read it and put it back. For a group running a starter adventure, that is often more practical than buying one class deck per player.
Room for your own magic
The 6 customizable cards are a small but useful extra. Use them for a homebrew cantrip, a magic item that casts a spell, or a reminder of a house rule your table applies to concentration. Because they share the format of the printed cards, they slot into the deck without looking out of place.
Built to grow with your character
Dungeons & Dragons sells two follow-up boxes, Spells Levels 2-3 and Spells Levels 4-5, each sold separately. Start here at character creation, then add the next box when your party approaches the levels where 2nd-level and 3rd-level slots open up. That pacing spreads the cost over a campaign and keeps the deck focused on spells you can actually cast.
Why it ranks first
We ranked it above the class decks because it lines up with the current Player's Handbook and covers the spells almost every new character will use. If your group plays the 2024 rules, older class decks may show wording that no longer matches your book. This box avoids that mismatch.
Who it is for
It suits players rolling their first caster, groups that switched to the 2024 rules and Dungeon Masters who want one shared deck for the table. If your character is already past 3rd level, pair it with the Levels 2-3 box instead of buying it alone.
